Universal Eye Health Coverage in Indonesia

Universal Health Coverage is to ensure that all people can access promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative health services they need, of sufficient quality to be effective, while also ensuring that the use of these services does not expose the user to financial hardship.

On February 2022, the Indonesian Community Ophthalmology Society (INACOS) held their fifth monthly webinar with the topic of The Implementation of Universal Eye Health Coverage in Indonesia. The following webinar discussed the current situation of UHC, along with a progress update that was lead by their first speaker, Dr. Donald Pardede, MPPM. As well as dr. Syumarti, SpM(K), MSc, CEH who reviewed the strategical plan in achieving universal eye health coverage in Indonesia. Audiences were pulled into a captivating discussion with speakers, led by Moderator, dr. Anna P. Bani, SpM(K).

The topic of UHC was also supported by the members of INACOS, following the passing dr. Aldiana Halim, SpM(K), MSc, who fought for his dreams in achieving universal health coverage especially to those far within reach of proper primary eye care.

The sad reality is that a large portion of the population with visual impairment has yet to have access to quality primary eye health care. World Report Of Vision, mainly focused on developing a strategy for universal health coverage, now known as the integrated People-Centered Eye Care (IPCEC). Prof. Dr. dr. Nila Moeloek and dr. Aldiana Halim, SpM(K), MSc, both represented Indonesia as a leading country in the 72th World Health Assembly in 2019. Their efforts has lead WHO to acknowledge Universal Eye Health Care and was adopted into their resolution in 2020.

Hence to honour dr. Aldiana Halim, SpM(K),MSc purpose and further his efforts to improve eye health coverage throughout Indonesia, OFKOMer’s Monthly Webinar prepared a memorial video. We hope that this video is able to remind and inspire the members of PERDAMI in their endeavor to improve eye health coverage for Indonesia. Thank you dr. Aldi, we will continue you life’s work.
